Ghana?s ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) are poised for victory Tuesday in a parliamentary by-election at Talensi in the Upper East Region.

The other political parties contesting the seat held previously by only the NDC and NPP are the Progressive People?s Party, Independent People?s Party, People?s National Convention, Ghana Freedom Party, and the United Progressive Party.

The event followed the vacation of the parliamentary seat after the Member of Parliament for the Talensi constituency, Robert Nachinab Doameng Mosore, vacated his seat following his installation as Paramount Chief of the Tongo Traditional Area, as demanded by Ghana?s constitution.
The seat is now open to eight contestants of various political parties but the ruling NDC and opposition NPP stand the best chance of winning the by-election.

Barely four days to the polls, President John Dramani Mahama, at a rally, said ?Talensi is the thermometer and barometer we are using to send a signal to the other parties that come 2016 the NDC will win the general election convincingly?.

He told supporters of the NDC the ruling party was ?expecting 20,000 votes from the electorate? during the by-election Tuesday.

The election, President Mahama said, was a ?dress rehearsal for the 2016 general election?, urging the people to vote for the party?s candidate, B.T. Baba, a retired deputy Director of the Ghana Prisons Service.
However, the 2016 presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, told a rally for the party at Winkongo in the Talensi Constituency that ?supporting Wuni (NPP candidate) to win the by-election will begin the NPP?s homestretch for 2016?.

Nana Akufo -Addo urged the people to vote for Duanab Pearson Wuni, the party?s candidate, saying that would create the path for the NPP to follow to come to power in 2017. Enditem
