Ghana’s Davis Cup campaign concluded in disappointment on Saturday (20 July) as the Golden Rackets were relegated to Africa Group IV following a defeat to Nigeria in the final round of Group III.

While competing at the Tennis Centre of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, Ghana’s team needed victories in both final matches to retain their Group III status.

Ghana started promisingly against Côte d’Ivoire, securing a comprehensive 3-0 victory, their first complete win. Samuel Agbesi Osei Antwi, filling in for Isaac Nortey, won against Myko Yohann Himad Kouame with a score of 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. Abraham Asaba followed with a hard-fought 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 triumph over Abdulaziz Bationo. The doubles duo of Osei Antwi and debutant Lameck Bagerbaseh sealed the sweep with a 7-6, 7-5 victory over Bationo and Kouame.

However, the hosts, Nigeria, proved formidable. Michael Emmanuel defeated Isaac Nortey 6-3, 6-2. At the same time, Christopher Bulus matched the scoreline against Abraham Asaba, securing Nigeria’s promotion to the Davis Cup World Group II play-offs and consigning Ghana to relegation.

The final doubles match was abandoned after Ghana won the first set 6-3, with Nigeria’s Wilson Oswalele Igbinovia and Uchenna Oparaoji retiring.

The standings of the 2024 Davis Cup Africa Group III, held from Monday (15 July) to Saturday (20 July), are as follows:

  1. Nigeria
  2. Ghana
  3. Côte d’Ivoire

Ghana will now look ahead to regaining promotion in future Davis Cup campaigns.
