The Energy Commission (EU) has confiscated 45 forty footer containers loaded with 5, 600 pieces of used refrigerators at the Tema Port.

Mr Abu Jinapor, Deputy Minister of Energy and Petroleum, said government has passed a legislatives instrument (LI) 1932 to prohibit the importation of second-hand refrigerators and electronic appliance into the country.

He said this when a team from the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Ministry of Environment, Science and Innovation, accompanied by the Energy Commission visited the port to confiscate the seized refrigerators in Accra.

He said following the passages of the LI importers appealed to government to give them a two-year period to enable them put measures in place to address their challenges.

He said these used home appliances account for about 60 per cent of domestic electricity consumption.

The Deputy Minister said aside the heavy electricity consumption, theses appliances also have environmental impact through the gases in them.

Mr Jinapor said, the Ministry together with the Ministry of Environment, Science and Innovation would engage the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice to prosecute people who import these appliances.

He said government is engaging with the Energy Commission to increase the financial flow for the refrigerator rebate scheme on-going.

The scheme was launched in September last year in Accra and Tema to ensure that Ghanaians replace old power-consuming refrigerators with new energy efficient ones.

The scheme dubbed: ?Promoting Energy Efficient Appliance and Transformation of Refrigerating Appliance Market in Ghana,? aims at improving the energy efficiency of appliance.

Dr Oteng Adjei, Minister of Environment, Science and Innovation, said government has acquired resources from the Swiss government to manage e-waste.

He commended stakeholders, especially the EU for their support in the ban of the appliances, saying the Union has also taking steps to stop members from exporting the products.

The Minister said Ghana has become a dumping site for the used items and it is time to stop them.

Meanwhile the team visited the refrigerator dismantling plant at Afienya, where the confiscated used refrigerators were sent to. GNA
