Ghanaian Lawyers Urged To Go For Further Course

The Chief Justice of Ghana, Georgina Wood, has called on all young lawyers across the country to consider taking some post-graduate courses to become well versed in their profession.

?I urge you all young lawyers of our beloved country to aim high and learn high,? the Chief Justice said.

The CJ was addressing a group of young lawyers at the Novotel Hotel at a forum held by the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) in conjunction with the British High Commission (BHC) in Accra, for the young lawyers.

Ms. Wood lamented that while judges and lawyers in other countries like Kenya strived to do some post-graduate studies in order to upgrade themselves, the reverse was the case in Ghana.

Commenting on the efforts being made by the Judicial Service of Ghana to curb this situation, which she described as ?a problem that must be solved,? the CJ noted that ?we have begun a programme which grants judges at the Circuit and Appeal courts the opportunity to undergo some post-graduate studies in the US and the UK?.

The Chief Justice pleaded with all lawyers in the country to conduct themselves well in order to hold in high esteem the sanctity of their profession.

A criminal justice adviser at the BHC, Roger Coventry, in a speech, admonished practitioners of the law to ?use your barrister skills to improve your society, to give help and justice to those who suffer from injustice within your communities,? adding ?let the cause of justice be of interest to you all.?

Mr Coventry further urged all lawyers to cherish and embrace the fight against the abuse of women and children and the high level of corruption that has engulfed the Ghanaian society.

The Forum

The Young Lawyers Forum has been formed, according to the president of GBA, Nene Amegatcher, to enable the Bar to offer the younger generation of lawyers various opportunities to engage in the work of the Association.

He expressed worry that the number of young lawyers kept increasing every year without commensurate efforts to meet the challenges that besiege them.

The forum, the president noted, would be a division within GBA and would enable all young lawyers across the country to meet regularly to deliberate on issues bordering on their welfare as far as their career was concerned.
