Four young athletes from Ghana’s national youth boxing team, known as the Black Rockets, have departed Accra for the inaugural African Schools Championship in Algeria.
Led by head coach Charles Quartey and assistant Joseph Martey, the team flew ahead of the main Ghanaian contingent to prepare for the tournament starting July 26, 2025.
The boxers represent Ghana across four weight divisions: Richardson Ofori (48kg light flyweight), William Laryea (50kg flyweight), Abdul Rahman Ablorh (60kg lightweight), and Henry Owusu (66kg welterweight). Their early arrival allows for acclimatization before the multi-sport event, which aims to foster youth athletic development across the continent.
Hosted across Algerian cities Constantine, Sétif, Skikda, and Annaba through August 5, the championship expects participation from 44 African nations and over 2,456 athletes. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune serves as patron of the games, which mark a significant investment in Africa’s next generation of sporting talent. Final registrations may expand the roster before competition begins.
