The Ghana Diaspora Political Action Committee (GHPAC) has endorsed New York State Assemblymember Zohran Kwame Mamdani in his campaign for Mayor of New York City, citing his commitment to immigrant communities and working families.
GHPAC USA represents the political arm of Ghana Diaspora Public Affairs Collective, working to increase Ghanaian American representation in elected office and promote community participation in the political process. The organization announced its support after observing Mamdani’s efforts over several months.
Stephanie A. Arthur of GHPAC highlighted Mamdani’s personal background as central to his policy positions. The assemblymember was raised in Uganda and named after Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, widely recognized as an architect of Pan Africanism.
“Zohran’s upbringing in Uganda and the profound influence of being named after Ghana’s first president have shaped his lifelong affinity for immigrant communities,” Arthur stated. She emphasized that this background enables him to understand challenges facing immigrant families and advocate for opportunity creating policies.
The endorsement focused on several specific policy proposals in Mamdani’s platform. His plans include rent freezes aimed at addressing housing insecurity, government run grocery programs to combat inflation impacts, and universal free pre kindergarten access for all children regardless of location.
GHPAC described these initiatives as providing direct benefits to Ghanaian families across New York City. The organization noted that many Americans currently struggle with basic expenses including utilities and employment stability, making economic relief measures particularly relevant.
The pre kindergarten proposal addresses both educational access and financial pressures on working parents starting or expanding families. Mamdani’s plan would ensure quality early education availability without regard to zip code or family income levels.
Arthur characterized Mamdani’s leadership style as reflecting deep commitment to equity, compassion, and inclusion. These values resonate strongly within the Ghanaian and broader African diaspora communities, according to the political action committee’s assessment.
The assemblymember has championed multiculturalism and advocated for working families throughout his time in office. GHPAC observed his intentional bridge building efforts across New York City’s diverse neighborhoods and communities over recent months.
“Zohran Mamdani represents the kind of visionary, compassionate leadership that New York City needs,” Arthur added. She noted that his commitment to immigrant empowerment, economic fairness, and inclusive governance aligns with organizational values.
The endorsement includes a call to action urging Ghanaian and African diaspora community members to participate actively in the democratic process. GHPAC encouraged voters to support Mamdani’s vision for what the organization describes as a fairer, more inclusive city.
GHPAC positions itself as supporting candidates who champion issues positively impacting the Ghanaian American community. The organization’s mission extends beyond endorsements to increasing overall political participation among diaspora populations.
The political action committee framed the mayoral race as a pivotal election requiring community voices and engagement. Its statement emphasized shared values of justice, unity, and opportunity as guiding principles for candidate evaluation and support.
Mamdani’s policy platform addresses housing affordability through rent control measures at a time when many New Yorkers face displacement pressures. The grocery program proposal aims to provide stability for families managing food costs amid ongoing inflation.
The endorsement represents GHPAC’s assessment that Mamdani’s proposals would create better living conditions for all New Yorkers while specifically benefiting immigrant communities. The organization views his background and policy positions as complementary strengths.
GHPAC characterized the assemblymember’s approach as promoting policies that uplift immigrant communities through practical measures addressing daily economic challenges. This focus on material conditions distinguishes his platform in the organization’s evaluation.
