Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah announced on July 21, 2025, that the government will reconstruct the vandalized statue of the Zugran of the Kusaug Traditional Area in Bawku.
The monument was damaged during a reported altercation between military personnel and local youth on July 13.
Speaking in Accra, Boamah framed the restoration as a gesture toward cultural reconciliation, stating: “Government has decided to take necessary measures to reconstruct the statue.” The incident occurred after youth allegedly attacked soldiers stationed in the volatile region, escalating tensions in the conflict-prone area.
The minister simultaneously affirmed military readiness to contain further unrest, noting: “The Ghana Armed Forces is actively monitoring developments… to ensure any potential escalation is swiftly contained.”
He reiterated President Mahama’s dual-track approach prioritizing dialogue while vowing to “deal with” criminals exploiting chieftaincy disputes. Boamah concluded by declaring Ghana “safe, peaceful, and stable,” aligning with the administration’s reset agenda.
