The Interior Ministry has revised curfew hours for Bawku and surrounding areas effective July 27, 2025, following recommendations by the Upper East Regional Security Council.
The new restrictions now run from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. daily until further notice, significantly extending the overnight confinement period.
A ministry statement urgently appealed to community leaders and residents to pursue peaceful resolutions to local tensions. “Government calls on Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth and people of the area to exercise restraint… and use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace,” the announcement read. This appeal accompanies a total ban on carrying arms, ammunition, or offensive weapons within the municipality, with violations warranting arrest and prosecution.
The heightened security measures follow recent violent incidents in northern Ghana, including targeted killings and an attack on a student reportedly dragged from his dormitory and shot by assailants. The curfew adjustment aims to curb escalating conflicts amid heightened tensions following these events. Security forces maintain increased vigilance across the region to enforce the new regulations.
