Ghana has taken a major step in modernizing its travel documents with the introduction of chip-embedded passports, effective April 28, 2025.

The new passports, issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, come with enhanced security features, cultural symbolism, and improved processing systems. Here’s what the changes mean for citizens.

Can I Still Use My Old Passport?

Yes. Existing biometric passports remain valid until their expiration date—some as far as 2030—in line with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. There is no immediate requirement to replace current passports unless they are nearing expiry.

Key Features of the New Passport

  1. Advanced Security – An embedded microchip stores biometric data, making forgery extremely difficult.

  2. Cultural Identity – The design incorporates Adinkra symbols such as Fawohodie (freedom) and Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu (unity in diversity), reflecting Ghanaian heritage.

  3. Global Compliance – Meets ICAO’s latest requirements, ensuring smoother international travel.

  • 24/7 Processing: Passport offices now operate round-the-clock to reduce delays.

  • Faster Issuance:

    • Standard processing: 15 working days

    • Expedited service: 5 working days

  • Free Home Delivery: Direct to your doorstep.

  • Ghana Post Pickup: Available for applicants without a fixed address.

  • Real-Time Tracking: Monitor application status online.

Revised Fees (Pending Parliamentary Approval)

  • New Application: GH₵350 (down from GH₵500)

  • No Hidden Charges: Delivery and tracking services are included.

Handling Your New Passport

To protect the embedded chip:

  • Avoid bending or folding.

  • Keep away from moisture and extreme heat.

  • Do not stack with other chip-based cards (e.g., bank cards).

Diaspora Applications

Ghanaians abroad can apply for the chip-embedded passport at any Ghanaian embassy or high commission.

Why the Upgrade?

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa stated that the shift is part of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to digitize passport services, eliminate middlemen (“goro boys”), and enhance efficiency. The move also aims to curb fraud while creating jobs in the passport issuance ecosystem.

With these changes, Ghana joins a growing list of African nations adopting e-passports to bolster security and streamline international travel. Citizens are encouraged to apply at their convenience, with no urgent need to replace valid passports.
