Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) reignited tensions with former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta by redeclaring him a “wanted person” following his absence from a 2 June 2025 corruption probe meeting.

The OSP warned of potential INTERPOL Red Notice issuance as Ofori-Atta’s lawyers accused prosecutors of refusing legal correspondence.

Sources within Ofori-Atta’s legal team confirmed couriers attempting to deliver documents were turned away on 3 June. OSP officials stated they wouldn’t accept materials until 6 or 9 June, a stance lawyers called “baffling” since 6 June is a public holiday. This follows the OSP’s rejection of Ofori-Atta’s compromise to participate via video link, citing health reasons.

Legal representative Davies confirmed submitting medical documentation to both the OSP and Human Rights Court. He challenged Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng’s scrutiny of the diagnosis: “When did he transmogrify to be a doctor?” Davies also contested suggestions of an in-absentia trial, stating: “We are all lawyers. We also know what to do. Has he exhausted all legal avenues?”

The Human Rights Court will rule this month on Ofori-Atta’s challenge to his initial “wanted” designation. His team seeks to prevent future such declarations and remove related notices from OSP platforms. This dispute originated in February 2025 when the OSP first declared Ofori-Atta a “fugitive” after he missed a meeting during medical treatment abroad. Tags were removed following negotiations, rescheduling the meeting to 2 June before the latest breakdown.
