Ghana Police Service has rescued a 12-year-old boy subjected to severe torture in New Ankasa near Elubo, Western Region, following the circulation of a viral video showing the assault.
The footage depicted the child suspended from a rooftop with nylon ropes while being beaten by two men.
According to the Half Assini Divisional Police Command, the attack occurred after the boy was accused of stealing GHC200. Suspects Issah Morro, 58, and Suleman Abdul Rashid, 27, were arrested shortly after the video sparked public outrage. Both remain in custody assisting investigations.
The victim received medical treatment and was reunited with his father, with authorities confirming his stable condition. Superintendent Olivia E.T. Adiku, Head of Public Affairs for Western Region Police, reiterated the Service’s commitment to child safety: “We urge members of the public to desist from all acts of vigilante justice. Report suspicions to the nearest police station.”
Police emphasized using official channels to report crimes, as human rights advocates renew calls for stricter penalties against child violence. The case highlights persistent challenges in curbing extrajudicial punishments in Ghana.
