Ghana’s government has formally congratulated the national women’s football team for reaching the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations semifinals for the first time since 2016.
Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams praised the Black Queens’ achievement in Morocco, calling it “a proud moment for all Ghanaians” in an official statement released Sunday.
The team secured their semifinal position after a dramatic penalty shootout victory against Algeria on Saturday. Following a goalless draw through extra time at Casablanca’s Stade Mohamed V, Ghana prevailed 4-2 in spot kicks. This breakthrough ends an eight-year absence from the tournament’s final stages.
Adams emphasized the significance of the milestone: “On behalf of the Ministry and government, I extend heartfelt congratulations… This feat is remarkable after almost nine years.” The Black Queens will face host nation Morocco on Tuesday at Rabat’s Olympic Stadium for a place in the championship match.
The achievement marks progress for Ghanaian women’s football under President Mahama’s administration, which has prioritized sports development. Government support enabled the team’s preparation for the tournament, reflecting broader investments in athletic programs nationwide.
