It has come to the attention of His Excellency President John Evans Atta Mills that publications in sections of the Nigerian media have sought to create the false impression that President Goodluck Jonathan was defeated in the race for Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) mainly because Ghana opposed Nigeria’s decision to contest.

For the records, Ghana did not block President Goodluck Jonathan’s bid to become Chairman of the AU.

Neither was President Goodluck Jonathan defeated.

It is being stated categorically that it was President Goodluck Jonathan’s decision not to contest for the position of AU Chairman.

Consequently, President Yayi Boni of Benin was elected unopposed.

His Excellency President John Evans Atta Mills admires the leadership qualities of President Jonathan as ECOWAS Chairman and is of the firm belief that the Sub Regional grouping will throw its full weight behind President Yayi Boni to have a successful tenure as Chairman of the AU.

Ghana and Nigeria continue to enjoy very solid fraternal working relations.
