Ghanaian boxing stakeholders have formally demanded access to the Ministerial Committee report investigating the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, citing stalled reforms in the sport.
The call came during an Extraordinary Congress at The Gym in Accra, where Dr. Ofori Asare, former President of the United Boxing Coaches Association of Ghana, challenged authorities over the withheld document.
Dr. Asare emphasized that stakeholders and the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) require the seven-member committee’s recommendations to implement critical reforms. “Moving between the NSA office, Congress, and the Ministry without releasing the report achieves nothing,” he stated, highlighting concerns over transparency. Stakeholders unanimously seek constitutional amendments and board restructuring to address governance gaps.
The committee was formed following Olanrewaju’s fatal injury during a July 2023 bout in Accra, which exposed systemic safety failures. Despite months of deliberations, its findings remain undisclosed, delaying promised regulatory overhauls.
Dr. Asare endorsed ambitions to establish Accra as a global boxing hub but stressed: “This vision requires foundational reforms guided by the committee’s findings.” The unresolved case continues to strain Ghana-Nigeria boxing relations and undermines confidence in athletic safeguards.
