Ghana’s Cabinet has greenlit the Ghana Medical Trust Fund Bill, marking a significant step toward establishing the Mahama Cares Fund to support citizens battling chronic illnesses.
President John Mahama announced the decision during a ceremony where security agencies and government officials donated over GH¢1 million to seed the initiative.
The fund will draw from multiple sources including the National Health Insurance Levy, budget allocations, and voluntary contributions from public officials.
President Mahama emphasized its dual focus: providing financial relief for conditions like diabetes and cancer while funding preventive health education.
However, health economists warn that long-term sustainability depends on securing reliable funding streams beyond initial donations, given Ghana’s persistent healthcare financing challenges.
