Government of Ghana has put in place measures to provide modern and befitting housing units for the country’s security services, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia disclosed here on Monday.

These include support from the Chinese government for the provision of 10,000 housing units across the country.

Cutting the sod for the constriction of 320 housing units for the police service, Bawumia said progressively government would bring solution to the housing challenges of the security services.

The vice-president disclosed that the Chinese government, through SinoHydro Construction, would deliver 10,000 housing units for the country.

“I would like to assure the Security Services that this project will not be the last. Government has reached advanced stages with Sinohydro Corporation Limited for the construction of houses and court structures,” Bawumia stated.

The beneficiary institutions of the SinoHydro project, according to him, will be the Ghana Armed Forces, Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Services, and the Judicial Service.

Bawumia lamented the deplorable state of residential facilities for the police service across the country, saying this had the tendency to hamper emergency mobilization of forces, efficient coordination and command effectiveness.

Turning to the country’s housing deficit, which stood at 1.7 million by last November, he said this was of grave concern to the government.

He however said it would take a greater input from the private sector to be able to defray this deficit as government would not be able to do it alone. Enditem
