The Ghana Airports Company Limited has regained control of over 16 acres of strategic land near Kotoka International Airport following an Accra High Court decision.

According to the May 6, 2025 ruling, GACL secured full re-entry to two parcels measuring approximately 10.63 acres and 5.66 acres.

These properties adjacent to Action Chapel International had been held by McDan Group subsidiaries McDan Shipping Company and Airport Logistics Limited since 2012.

GACL initiated legal proceedings in February 2025, alleging multiple lease violations and non-payment of ground rents totaling $26,296.

The High Court determined the defendants offered no valid legal defence. It awarded GACL all requested reliefs, including a perpetual injunction against further interference by McDan entities, and imposed GH¢50,000 in legal costs on them.

In an official statement, Ghana Airports Company described the judgment as reinforcing public accountability. “The repossession safeguards millions of dollars’ worth of state assets and underscores our commitment to lawful management of public property,” the company declared. This marks the latest development in ongoing tensions between the state-owned operator and McDan Group.

Operations at Terminal 1 of Kotoka International Airport involving McDan Aviation were previously suspended in December 2024 over debts. While those obligations were settled, the land dispute persisted until this ruling. Industry analysts note the case reflects state institutions’ increasing efforts to reclaim critical infrastructure from private entities deemed non-compliant with agreements.

With jurisdiction over 900 acres, GACL’s successful repossession may establish a precedent for protecting lands designated for national aviation projects. The court’s decision enabled a subsequent demolition exercise on the reclaimed site. Government authorities have separately denounced reported assaults on a Multimedia Group journalist and witness during Wednesday’s demolition activity.
