German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday vowed to protect Germany’s Jewish community from the threat of Islamist terrorism after the shooting attack at Copenhagen’s main synagogue.

Federal and state governments would alongside other stakeholders to ensure the safety of Jewish institutions and individuals across the country, Merkel said during a government press conference.

“We would like to continue to live peacefully alongside the Jews currently living in Germany. We are glad and grateful for the fact that Jewish life once again exists in Germany,” she said.

The comments were made after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on European Jews to emigrate to Israel after Islamist attacks on Jews in Paris and Copenhagen.
