Freelance Journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni has been adjudged the Journalist of the Year for 2011 at the 17th Ghana Journalist Association Awards ceremony held in Accra Saturday night.

Mr Manasseh Azure Awuni also picked four other awards in Best Report in Radio with the story ?Stigmatising disability?, Best News Report, Best Sanitation report with the story, ?Poor sanitation in Legon bush canteen? and Best feature report in print.

He was also a runner-up in the sports category.
Awuni is one of the few young and upcoming journalists to receive the top prize in the awards.

Shortly after receiving his prize, Mr Awuni expressed appreciation to God and said, ?God has made me to forget the hardships in my father?s house. My secret is God and very grateful to my father?.

?I encourage all parents that poverty is not an excuse not to educate your children?, he said and referred to the fact that, though his father is a poor night watchman, he made sacrifices for his education.

The GJA event was on the theme: ?Giving Credence to Elections and Democratic Stability: The Role of the Media? and was held at the Banquet Hall of the State House in Accra.

Out of the 434 entries, 35 journalists and media institutions were selected for 35 categories of awards.
