Saudi authorities on Monday executed four men in the southern city of Najran after they were convicted of drug smuggling.

hangThe Interior Ministry said that the four Saudi nationals had been arrested as they were picking up a large consignment of hashish on the Saudi-Yemeni border.

The executions take the total number of people put to death in the conservative kingdom, which practices a strict interpretation of Islamic law, to 32 so far this year.

Saudi Arabia imposes the death penalty for a wide range of offences including sorcery, rape, armed robbery, drug trafficking and murder.

According to the Italian anti-death penalty group Hands Off Cain, Saudi Arabia executed 78 people in 2013, the fourth-highest number of executions worldwide after China, Iran and Iraq.
