Former Member of Parliament for Subin, Eugene Boakye Antwi, has declared he will not defend any former government appointee arrested for alleged embezzlement.
The ex-deputy minister emphasized that opposition members should not automatically shield their colleagues from prosecution solely based on party affiliation. His remarks underscore a stance against partisan interference in corruption cases.
Antwi stated that if individuals are found culpable with verifiable evidence, the legal process must proceed unimpeded. According to his interview with Channel 1 TV, monitored by mynewsgh.com, he stressed accountability over loyalty: “If [someone] has stolen state money… and I’m shown evidence, I wouldn’t defend you.” His position challenges reflexive opposition tactics under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), now in opposition after the 2024 electoral defeat.
The former lawmaker, who served eight years in Parliament during former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration, criticized defending corruption as electorally detrimental. He highlighted the risk of alienating floating voters, questioning, “If I defend somebody who stole state funds… what am I selling? That NPP has become a haven for criminals?” His comments reflect internal debates about the NPP’s path toward Ghana’s 2028 elections.
Antwi’s stance emerges amid President John Mahama’s NDC administration, which has prioritized anti-corruption measures since taking office in 2025. The NPP has yet to formally respond to his remarks.
