Only heavy duty vehicles ply the road now. | By James Sambo

Floods have reportedly blocked parts of the Makurdi-Gboko highway from Tyo-mu end, about 13 kms from Makurdi, following a recent overflow of the River Benue.

The normally busy road which was submerged by flood is now plied mainly by heavy duty vehicles as other motorists now avoid it.

It was gartered that apart from Gwer East, Gwer West, Makurdi and Guma, the road is also the gateway to the remaining 19 local government area councils as well as a link to Taraba and Cross River.

Vehicles travelling to Gboko and the other parts of Tiv land, now opt to move through Aliade, which is about twice the trip from Makurdi to Gboko.

Following the blockage an unusual traffic however, built up on the Aliade road which connects the state with Kogi, the East and South Western parts of the country.

A senior official of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) who pleaded anonymity, said that the situation had become very tasking, resulting in the deployment of a large number of his colleagues to the road to ensure the free flow of traffic, owing to the road diversion at Tyo-Mu.

Some motorists, mainly those travelling to Gboko, expressed concern over the situation and called on the government to take urgent steps in alleviating the suffering of the people.
