Five fatalities and 55 injuries have been confirmed following severe flooding in northeastern Nigeria’s Adamawa State, according to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) officials.

Operations head Ladan Ayuba reported heavy rainfall overnight Sunday submerged residential areas and infrastructure in Yola, prompting evacuations.

Rescue teams deployed wooden boats to assist stranded individuals, with displaced residents now sheltering in temporary camps. Ayuba confirmed ongoing emergency response operations across affected zones.

Meteorological authorities note Nigeria’s annual rainy season frequently causes flooding in northern regions, typically intensifying by mid-May. The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency issued a flood alert through August 5 for Adamawa and 27 other states, citing overwhelmed drainage systems.

Projections indicate 739 communities across 162 local government areas may face flooding impacts in coming days.
