Five Council Chairmen in Enugu State are in police net over allegations of embezzlement and misappropriation of public funds for political patronages.

Their arrest followed a petition to the Inspector-General of Police by the Enugu West Peoples Forum entitled ?Looting and Fraudulent Diversion of Public Funds by Local Government Chairmen in Enugu State?.

Similarly, about 10 Commissioners from Enugu State are currently guests of the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission, ICPC, in Abuja.

They are said to be answering questions on allegation of corruption, graft and other related offences, perpetrated in their respective ministries.

This is even as Governor Sullivan Chime has reportedly stormed Abuja to lobby the presidency and other top party officials to stave of the pressure of anti-graft agencies on his administration.

The petitioners accused the Council Chairmen, of deducting and diverting N10 million of their respective Council allocations in the past ten months, totaling about N450 million to allegedly fund the senatorial ambition of the State Governor, Barrister Sullivan Chime.

Among the chairmen arrested were the Chairman of the Awgu Local Government Council, Hon. Nnanna Nze; Aninri LG counterpart Chairman Hon. Nwabueze Nwobodo; Ezeagu LG Chairman, Hon. Emeka Ozoagu; Oji-River LG, Hon. Onyemaechi Jideofor; and their Udi LG counterpart, Hon. Chinedu Iloeje.

According to the petitioners ?In September 2014, each of these local government chairmen contributed the sum of one million naira each (N1,000,000) towards the hosting of the traditional rulers in the Enugu West Senatorial District at which the sole purpose of the meeting was to discuss how to support Bar. Chime at the forth coming PDP primaries for the District; and out of the money contributed, the traditional rulers were given N1,000,000 cash, 10 cows and assorted drinks, all to cajole them to support Bar. Chime?s senatorial bid?, the Forum further alleged.

?A few days ago, the five local government chairmen once again dipped their hands in the coffers of their local governments and withdrew money with which they purchased PDP Expression of Interest Forms and Nomination Forms for four million five hundred thousand naira (N4,500,000) for Bar. Sullivan Chime to contest the PDP primaries for the Enugu West Senatorial District seat.

?In September 2014, the five local government chairmen contributed the sum of ten million naira (N10,000,000) each toward a party rally held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu?.

The petitioners, therefore pleaded with the Police IG ?to save the entire local government from the activities of the above named gentlemen who are bent on mortgaging the future of children?.

The Council Chairmen, were therefore picked-up in Enugu by a special squad from the Louis Edet House on the orders of the Police IG and taken to the headquarters of the Enugu State Command of the force.

However, upon hearing the development, a security aide to Governor, Sullivan Chime, was dispatched to negotiate their bail on self-recognition.

The Council Chairmen were, however, asked to report at the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on Monday, which they obeyed. But only the five Chairmen arrested on Friday reported as the rest were still at large. The local government bosses were still being held as at the time of filing this report and it is not clear whether they would eventually be released.
