A fire that broke out at dawn on Wednesday destroyed at least 65 business structures in Tanzania’s northwest region of Mwanza on the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa’s largest lake.

Phyllis Nyimbi, Nyamagana district commissioner, said: “We thank God nobody was hurt by the fire.”

She told Xinhua in a telephone interview that the fire that broke out at 3:30 a.m. at Makoroboi area destroyed the 65 business structures in 45 minutes before it was put out.

“The destroyed business structures belonged to 159 small-scale business people,” she said, adding that destroyed goods included bags, clothes, cosmetics and shoes.

Nyimbi said preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a short circuit. Enditem
