Chipper Cash, Western Union, and Zoona have partnered to launch international money transfers within the Chipper Cash app, expanding financial inclusion for Zambia’s 20 million people.

The service enables users to send funds to 200+ countries via mobile wallets or cash pickup at global Western Union locations, with bank payouts forthcoming.

The collaboration merges Western Union’s global network with Zoona’s local expertise acquired by Chipper Cash in 2022 serving 5 million customers across Africa.

Mohamed Touhami el Ouazzani, Western Union’s Africa VP, called the integration a “game-changer,” while Zoona CEO Brett Magrath noted Zambia’s shift from cash-based systems to digital ecosystems driven by rising smartphone use.

The service addresses Zambia’s reliance on remittances, which contributed to Sub-Saharan Africa’s $54 billion inflows in 2024. Users fund transfers through digital wallets, rechargeable via retailers, mobile networks, or ATMs. The partnership underscores Africa’s fintech evolution, combining physical agent access with mobile-first solutions to serve unbanked populations.
