Ensuring the African Union’s (AU) financial independence will be a major discussion of the ongoing 30th summit of the continental body, an Ethiopian official said on Tuesday.

The 30th AU summit kicked off Monday at the headquarters of the pan-African bloc in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa under the theme “Winning the Fight against Corruption: A Sustainable Path to Africa’s Transformation.” The biannual summit will last until Jan. 29.

Speaking to journalists, Workneh Gebeyhu, Ethiopian foreign minister, said African countries should strengthen economic interdependence to strengthen political independence of AU.

“Self-financing is a recurring theme of AU’s reform agenda, African nations should develop capacity to trade more each other, which is currently dominated by trade with European nations,” he further said.

African nations are currently discussing implementation of the Continental Free Trade Area (EFTA) and national fixed tax and export revenues contribution to the AU to boost its internal financial capacity. Enditem
