A female suicide bomber disguised as ?roadside hawker? detonated an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at Biu central market, killing six traders and passersby with the injuring of 15 others on Thursday at
about 11.45am.


Biu is the second largest town, and located 187 kilometres south of Maiduguri the Borno state capital.
According to a vigilante youth, Abdu Alhaji Abdu, the female suspect initially target the central market that holds every Thursday to kill as many people trooping into the market, but the bomb hid in a flowing veil however; exploded with a deafening sound that rocked the town over a distance of 15 kilometres.

?We were shocked and horrified, when the hidden IED exploded with a loud bang for seconds, and people started running into various directions from the market placed after 11am today. The devastations of blast on lives and property could have been higher, if the female bomber had access to the central market, but the people were lucky,
when the bomb exploded near the market entrance,? said Abdu in a telephone interview yesterday in Maiduguri.
He said: ?The blast has ripped off the body of the suspect into pieces, with the killing of six other traders on the spot. About over a dozen people were also injured in Thursday?s bomb blast, and the Red Cross and soldiers have taken them to Biu hospital for treatment.

The soldiers at the blast scene, he added warned people against gathering in groups, because the terrorists cashed in on such congregations to massively attack and kill. It was also learnt that the eastern flank of the market has been cordoned off by the military to prevent any further attack. Confirming the incident yesterday in Maiduguri, the Borno State Police Command also said that the reports reaching the headquarters indicated that half a dozen people were feared dead at Biu bomb blast.
