The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the Bono, Bono East and Ahafo Regions on Wednesday began a ‘consumer vigilant’ campaign to sensitize the general public to check what is good and safe for their health before buying.

The essence is to prevent dishonest traders from selling unwholesome goods and products, especially packaged and canned items to unsuspecting consumers within this period of Christmas festive season.

Under the theme “Operation One Consumer – One Officer 2019”, the campaign is designed for FDA officers to be available one-on-one to interact with the public to instantly address their concerns concerning food consumption, the use of medicines, cosmetics and other medical devices.

Ms. Akua Amponsaa Owusu, the acting FDA Head for the three regions announced this when she addressed traders and the general public at the commencement of the campaign at the Techiman market in the Bono East Region.

It was also to educate the general public on “things to be critically concern with, when buying edible items at anywhere to ensure their own safety.

Ms. Owusu noted most consumers were usually overtaken by the joy of eating and drinking during Christmas celebration and as a result purchased products without checking if they were either expired or not.

Hence the need to embark on “this special and targeted campaign because the FDA throughout the year does educational campaigns on wholesome food and drugs consumption as part of its field operational programmes”, she explained.

Ms. Owusu added the FDA has been monitoring the safety, quality, efficacy and performance of all regulated products so as to ensure the health and safety of the consuming public.

“This market surveillance activity is fused with consumer education and complaint handling to better guarantee the safety of our regulated products”, she emphasized.

Ms. Owusu stressed it was the desire of the FDA to receive questions, concerns and complaints about issues from sellers, shop attendants and consumers directly on the field (markets) to enable the FDA to properly and comprehensively address them.

Mr. Richard Kyeremeh Yeboa, a Senior Regulatory Officer said the FDA would continue to educate and inform consumers on some basic things and indications to look for when buying particularly edible items to ascertain if they were not expired and safe for consumption.

He said packaged products that were bloated, dented and rusted were unwholesome for human consumption and therefore entreated consumers to be very cautious before buying any of such items.
