One of Germany’s leading newspapers announced plans on Tuesday to slash its workforce by about 20 per cent as the crisis in the global media industry shows no signs of relenting.

The conservative daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) said it intends to trim about 200 jobs – including 40 from its newsroom – in the next two to three years as part of a cost-cutting drive aimed at saving the Frankfurt-based publisher more than 20 million euros (26 million dollars) by 2017.

The FAZ and its online news portal faz.net currently have about 9,000 employees.
