Expunge treason from constitution —Says Amnesty International

The Director of Amnesty International, Mr Lawrence Amesu, has called on the government to expunge treason from the country’s statute books.

Mr. Lawrence Amesu was reacting to the charge leveled against the Member of Parliament for Assin North, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong.

According to him, all attempts from Amnesty International to obliterate treason from the 1992 constitution have proved futile.

Speaking on radio XYZ last Wednesday, Mr. Lawrence Amesu noted that ”if we think that the death penalty is meant for armed robbers alone, then we are deceiving ourselves.”

He cautioned Ghanaians, especially politicians to be mindful of their utterances because anybody can fall a victim to such a situation.

He appealed to the government to put importance on Amnesty International’s call to taking death penalty off the constitution adding that “life is a fundamental human right, therefore it should not be tempered with.”

Meanwhile, the president of the Greater Accra Regional Bar Association, Mr. Frank Davies has averred that “we have heard very little of the fact to sustain the charge against Hon. Kennedy Agyapong.”

Mr. Frank Davies further added that “all we have heard is the excerpt of the playback on radio, maybe the police has much more information or fact that we do know ordinarily.”

He made reference to Article 19 clause 17 A, B and C of the 1992 constitution which strictly states what the ingredients of treason are.

In a related development, the Ga paramount stool has asked the MP for the Assin North, Mr. Kennedy Agyapong, to render an apology for the incitement of ethnic passions.

The house noted that “the police will deal with the criminal aspect, we are asking him to retract what he said and to apologise to us for trying to put Gas and Ewes at risk by inciting people to kill. We think it is most unfortunate.”

The house further appealed to politicians to desist from inciting ethnic tensions.
