Five major car rental companies in Europe — Avis, Europcar, Enterprise, Hertz and Sixt — have pledged to improve their service to address the increasing number of complaints from consumers, the European Commission said Thursday.

The Commission said in a statement that last year, 2,000 consumers in Europe reported they had booked cars online and had had to pay more when getting to the rental desk.

The number of complaints for the car rental sector doubled between 2010 and 2016, and the Commission and national consumer authorities had stepped in to help solve these problems.

The European Commission said these companies would now provide consumers with the following: the total booking price including all unavoidable charges; key rental services description in plain language; clear information on additional insurance; and transparent fuel policies.

The Commission and national authorities will continue to monitor the car rental market closely and all players should offer the same level of transparency on the service and the cost, it said. Enditem
