Ebola-MainThe risk that Ebola would start spreading in the European Union is “extremely low,” the bloc’s health commissioner says after the outbreak of the disease in West Africa was declared an international health emergency.

“This is both because relatively few people travelling to the EU are likely to be infected with the virus, and because of the way in which it spreads, i.e. only through direct contact with the symptomatic patient’s body fluids,” Tonio Borg said in a statement.

“It is also important to consider that the EU has very high standards of health and preventive care,” he added. “In the unlikely event of ebola reaching the EU, we are prepared in the face of the virus.”

Borg called for “solidarity” in fighting the disease, expressing confidence that the outbreak “will be successfully contained.”
