Ethiopia is advancing ecosystem restoration through its Green Legacy Initiative, now formalized by landmark legislation establishing dedicated funding for large-scale tree planting.

Official records confirm the program targets 7.5 billion seedlings this rainy season, bringing cumulative plantings to over 47.5 billion since 2019.

Parliament unanimously created the Green Legacy Initiative and Degraded Land Rehabilitation Special Fund in December 2024. The law allocates 0.5–1% of Ethiopia’s federal budget annually to restoration, with regional governments contributing proportionally. This institutional framework provides sustainable financing for climate adaptation efforts directly addressing soil erosion and food insecurity.

Concurrently, agricultural assessments show dramatic environmental impact: Annual fertile soil loss has dropped from 1.9 billion tonnes to 208 million tonnes, preserving farmland and reducing dam siltation. The initiative strategically incorporates fruit trees to enhance household nutrition and income streams, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals on hunger and climate action.

International observers note Ethiopia’s model is gaining regional traction. During planting ceremonies in Addis Ababa, Nigerian officials described the program as an “inclusive, impactful, and visionary” template for African climate resilience.

Beyond environmental metrics, the initiative demonstrates how nationally led ecological programs can simultaneously combat land degradation, boost food security, and fulfill global climate commitments. Ethiopia’s approach offers transferable strategies for Horn of Africa nations facing similar environmental pressures.
