Authorities in Ethiopia’s Amhara regional state, located in the northern part of the country announced on Monday they have pardoned 4,329 prisoners.

In a press statement, Amhara regional state attorney general office, said the prisoners pardon is part of a goodwill gesture as Ethiopia prepares to celebrate its own unique new year on Thursday.

The statement further said the 4,329 prisoners have been pardoned after meeting Ethiopia’s pardon law requirements, with 10 percent of the pardoned prisoners being females.

Ethiopian federal and regional government officials have also characterized mass prisoner release programs as part of efforts to widen political space by creating national consensus and reconciliation, in which regional states across the East African country also conducted similar large scale prisoners release over the past year.
