The Ethiopia Federal High Court on Wednesday sentenced a Brazilian woman to six and half years in prison for cocaine drug smuggling.

The Brazilian woman was sentenced to six and half years in prison for trying to smuggle 6.5 kilograms of cocaine drug through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in December 17, 2018.

The Brazilian woman had departed from Sao Paulo, and was transiting through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport on route to her final destination in Sao Paulo when she was caught with the large hoard of cocaine drug in her bag.

The Ethiopia Federal High Court also fined the Brazilian woman 170 U.S dollars on top of the prison sentence of six and half years.

Ethiopia has in recent months arrested dozens of foreigners for suspected drug trafficking, mainly transiting through Addis Ababa Bole International Airport while travelling between Latin American destinations and African destinations.

According to the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission’s Counter Narcotics Operation team, the 80 individuals, who are said to be nationals of 17 countries, were apprehended for suspected involvement in drug trafficking activities during the 2018 – 2019 fiscal year, which ended on July 7.

Most of the 80 individuals were caught while allegedly trying to smuggle drugs through the Addis Ababa Bole International Airport.

The seized drugs were being transported by a variety of foreign nationals including Nigerians, Brazilians, Venezuelans and South Africans. Enditem
