Ethiopia on Sunday inaugurated an information and communication technology (ICT) village sprawling on 200 hectares of land at Bole Lemi area in Addis Ababa, capital of the East African country. ICT
The ICT village has four different zones including business zone, assembly and warehouse zone, commercial zone, and knowledge zone.
The business zone houses companies involved in ICT services development while the assembly and warehouse zone accommodates those that operate on manufacturing and assembly areas.
The commercial zone provides social facilities necessary for the community within the ICT Park such as shopping mall, hotel, restaurant and others; and the knowledge zone is composed of research and development institutions and training centers.
The ICT village has been initiated to serve three main objectives including to develop the ICT industry in the country; to attract foreign investments towards technology transfer and exchanges; and also to create job opportunities for citizens.
It encompasses sectors like the telecom and IT manufacturing, ICT services, software products, ICT-enabled services, e-business and business processing outsourcing.
Cutting the ribbon to launch the ICT village, Debretsion Gebremichael, with the rank of Deputy Prime Minister Coordinator of Finance and Economic Cluster, and Minister of Communication and Information Technology of Ethiopia (MCIT), highlighted the role the ICT village plays in building business network and deepening researches in the sector.
So far about 20 local and foreign private companies have been registered to enter to the village.
Getachew Negash, State Minister of Communication and Information Technology of Ethiopia (MCIT), said that infrastructures, including telecom infrastructure and others necessary for the companies coming to the ICT village as well as buildings that enable to launch activities within the Park, have been accomplished.
The ICT village of Ethiopia is one of the medium-term activities of the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (MCIT) towards the development of the sector and realizing the economic benefits gained out of it. Enditem
