Ghana midfielder Michael Essien has paid glowing tributes to departing Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson who failed to sign him as a teenager.

The 71-year-old announced he will be retiring at the end of the season on Wednesday morning in news that will sadden most Manchester United fans.

Ferguson during his almost 27-years at the English giants have won 13 Premier League titles, 2 Champions League trophies, 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups  and several other titles in this illustrious time.

The Scot is however unpopular amongst many Africans for his stance on not signing enough African players.

One of such players he refused to sign is Michael Essien who completed trials at Manchester United as a teenager.

Ferguson decided against signing Essien who has gone on to become one of the world?s finest midfielders as he was considered at the time by the Scot as not having enough potential.

The Ghana international however retains his fullest respect in the 71-year-old following the announcement of his departure.

?Sir Alex. A legend and one of the greatest managers ever. Good luck in your retirement,? Essien Tweeted.

The on-loan Chelsea player at Real Madrid Tweet?s joins a flurry of mounting tributes pouring in for the former Aberdeen manager who is considered as one of the greatest managers in football history.
