A team of diplomatic envoys who represent their countries in Rwanda have observed that the work of the ICTR is important in ensuring that the genocide like the one perpetrated against the Tutsi in Rwanda is not repeated. The envoys made the remarks after visiting the Arusha based International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda today.

They also observed that the tribunal also contributes to the eradication of the culture of impunity.

The envoys which included the ambassadors of Tanzania, Kenya, China, Russia and the EU were led by Uganda’s high commissioner to Rwanda Richard Kabonero.

The eonvoys met with the tribunal’s registrar, prosecutors and magistrates and the ICTR detention facility.

The envoys were informed that one of the challenges facing the tribunal is five genocide suspects who were acquitted but until now they have not found a country of refuge.

The ambassadors also met with the Rwandan community in Arusha.
