Elijah Emojong

Kampala – Fide Master Elijah Emojong suffered a second round upset defeat at the hands of Daniel Baagadde in the Mulago Open Chess Championship on Friday.

The 2011 Uspa Chess Player of the Year is not in good health and barely put up a challenge against the determined Baagadde, losing 1-0. “I am just recovering from malaria. But I will try to do my best in the next rounds,” Emojong, who skipped the first round said.

Meanwhile, Olympiads Patrick Kawuma, Bob Bibasa, and Harold Wanyama are enjoying an early lead alongside Rajab Kamoga, Simon Gonza and youngster Richard Kato following their first and second rounds wins to amass a maximum two points.

Wanyama beat Wilson Mugwanya and Bibasa defeated Mudathir Bukenya. Kamoga outwitted Richard Tugume while Kawuma beat Vianney Luggya and Kato got past Innocent Kimera. In the ladies category, Olympiad Phiona Mutesi and 2011 Female Chess Player of the Year Christine Namaganda were joint top with two points by press time. The tournament ends this evening.
