The Birim Central Municipal Director of Agriculture, Mr Prosper Klu, has encouraged cocoa farmers to register to take part in the “Planting for food and jobs” programme, launched by the government.
He said it was in their own interest that they joined to assure the nation of adequate food security.
He was speaking at a farmers’ rally held at Akyem-Akuboa, near Akim-Oda for those into cocoa farming.
About 377 farmers in the municipality have registered to participate in the planting for food and jobs programme.
Mr. Klu hinted that 100 acres of land would be put under maize cultivation under the programme in the area, this planting season.
The municipality would also engage in rice and vegetable cultivation, he said, adding that, distribution of fertilizers and seeds for the next farming season would start in July.
These would be supplied at subsidized rate and there was going to be market support for the farmers, he added.
