Six persons died on the spot while 67 others were injured in a fatal road accident, which occurred at Ekumfi-Dunkwa on Friday, March 22 at 1030 hours.

The vehicles on which they were traveling collided head-on along the Mankessim-Accra stretch of the highway in the Ekumfi District of the Central Region.

Four of the deceased, made up of three males and three females, died on the spot whilst two others died at the hospital.

The Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Irene Serwaa Oppon, told the Ghanan News Agency that the police were informed of the accident and immediately proceeded to the scene and found three vehicles involved.

They were a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Bus with registration number AS 2951-10 driven by Ernest Appiah Kusi, a Golden Dragon/Yuton Bus with registration number GW 4368-14, driven by Enusin Ahmed Ato, and an Urvan Bus with registration number CR 9699-18.

The MMT Bus was travelling from Accra towards Cape Coast whilst the Golden Dragon and the Urvan buses were travelling from the Cape Coast direction towards Accra.

However, on reaching the outskirts of Ekumfi-Dunkwa, a private car in front of the Dragon Yuton bus slowed down to ran smoothly over a road bum, but due to the excessive speed of the Dragon Bus, the driver, who tried to avoid running into the rear of the private car, veered onto the lane of the oncoming Metro Bus, resulting in a head-on collision.

Of the 67 persons injured, 23 were sent to Apam Hospital, 21 to the Mercy Women’s Hospital at Mankessim, 18 to the Saltpond Government Hospital and five to the Winneba Trauma and Specialists Care Hospital for treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Saltpond Government Hospital Morgue for autopsy.

Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service joined the Police to immediately tow the accident vehicles to allow for the free flow of traffic.
