Ghanaians told to report criminals to police

0

The Yendi Municipal Chief Executive Mr Issah Zakaria has called on Ghanaians to volunteer information to the security services to eliminate criminals in their communities.

He said until people volunteer information to the security services particularly the Ghana Police Service, criminals would continue to live with them and make their lives miserable.

Mr Zakaria made the call when he inspected the on- going work on the maintenance and extension of street lights in Yendi township.

He said checking of criminal activities in the area would be enhanced following the maintenance and extension of the street lights in Yendi and its suburbs in the Yendi Municipality of Northern Region.

Mr Zakaria said street lights in the Municipality worth thousands of Ghana Cedis is funded by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Yendi Municipal Assembly.

The Municipal Co-ordinating Director Alhaji Shehu Kadri expressed the Assembly’s appreciation for the good work Messrs Windy Rose, the contractor is doing.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah – Ghana’s first president

Ms Samia Nkrumah, National Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), at the weekend stated the party’s readiness to commence unity talks again with the People’s National Convention (PNC).

This, she said, aimed at building a unified Nkrumaist force to unseat the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the December General Election.

She therefore urged the leadership of the PNC to reconsider coming back to the negotiation table after its national congress to restart sincere talks to unify the two parties.

Delivering a solidarity message on behalf of the CPP at the National Delegates’ Congress of the PNC in Sunyani, Ms Nkrumah stressed the need for the two parties to forge a united front to capture power.

She said the two parties share the ideology of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President, adding; “we have a common destiny to transform Ghana”.

The congress of the PNC was on the theme: “A United PNC for Victory in 2012.”

Ms Nkrumah paid tribute to members and the leadership of both parties for ensuring and sustaining the ideology and tradition of Dr Nkrumah, which she said had “survived the test of time”.

“Just last week, I was in Ethiopia to unveil the statue of our great father and founder Dr Kwame Nkrumah and this is a confirmation that (political) emancipation is still essential and possible today,” she said.

Alhaji Ahmed Ramadan, National Chairman of the PNC urged the party members not to be swayed by the internal wrangling and rather continue with their enthusiasm that had seen them through.

Ninety-eight people, comprising 78 apprentices and 20 master craft persons (MCPs) were presented with machines and other equipment at Kukuom in Asunafo South District of Brong Ahafo Region at the weekend.

The items provided by the government under the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) of the Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training of the Ministry of Education covered four trade areas.

These include auto mechanics, cosmetology, garment (dressmaking) and electronics (radio/television) repairing.

The NAP was designed by government as an intervention to reduce youth unemployment and improve the livelihood of early school leavers in the communities, besides serving as a pathway for the youth to engage in the trade areas of their choice and to promote industrial villages.

The items consisted 16 hairdressing equipment and accessories, 16 set of electronics and auto mechanic tools, 30 sewing machines for apprentices and 20 knitting machines for MCPs who were selected from Kukuom, Norbekow, Asufufuo and Sankore.

Speaking at a durbar organised by the District Assembly during which the items were presented to the MCPs, Mr Eric Opoku, Deputy Regional Minister said the items were meant to assist the beneficiaries to use them as start-up tools.

He said as part of government’s commitment to solve the unemployment problem in the country, 1000 dressmakers in the region had benefited from free distribution of sewing machines whilst 2,400 people had also been engaged as apprentices in dressmaking.

Arts workers call on government to mitigate effect of fuel hike

0

Mr Frank Boakye-Yiadom, Chairman of Arts Centre Workers Association (ACWA) in Accra on Friday called on government to institute measures to mitigate the effects of the recent increases in prices of petroleum products.

This, he said is affecting cost of production in the country.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra, Mr Boakye-Yiadom said the hike in the prices of petroleum products had negatively affected the business of the ACWA because cost of production had increased to an “unbearable state” and demoralising producers.

He said the Arts Centre well known for the exhibition of African artefacts is one of Ghana’s most visited tourism sites but had not gain the prominence it was supposed to get.

Mr Boakye- Yiadom said the association in June last year organised a fair to revamp the centre but that was not beneficial because there had not been any significant increase in patronage of its services.

He appealed to the Ministry of Tourism to brand the country well, adding: “Ghana is known worldwide for Kente as Brazil is well noted for football.”

Mr Boakye-Yiadom asked the government to ensure that proper security measures are put in place at the borders to prevent individuals from importing inferior China made cloths into the country, which he said is killing the local textile industry.

He urged Ghanaians to be proud of made in Ghana products adding, “I wish all workers would wear Kente on Fridays… to portray the Africans that we are”.
