ECOFEPA which is the Parliamentary group (caucus) with focus on enhancing women’s participation in politics and decision making positions as well as issues of the girl-child, in collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission and DANIDA, will officially launch the ECOWAS Gender and Election Strategic Framework and Action Plan on Monday, May 21 2018 in Abuja – Nigeria.

Theories unveiling the Strategic Framework will be conducted by the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Aminata Toungara (Cote d’Voire).

A release from ECOFEPA and copied to Newsghana.com.gh, stated that, this framework document focuses on 10 thematic areas, which serve as its strategic pillars to interrogate the various issues and challenges underpinning its efforts.

“It also highlights strategies aimed at addressing barriers to equal participation and representation of men and women in the political arena in West Africa,” the release added.

The release also said, “Also on the programme agenda will be the official presentation of the ECOWAS Gender and Election Strategic Framework and Action Plan, a document that serves as an advocacy tool to mobilize support for women from all stakeholders including Governments, Election Management Bodies (EMBS), religious and traditional authorities, legislatures and civil society in West Africa.

Specifically, the document is meant to drive enhanced political participation and representation of women in West Africa, as a shared vision and responsibility of both women and men.”

According to the release, part of the highpoint of the Summit includes discussions on boosting women’s participation in politics and decision making bodies to be presented by the Country Representative of UN Women, Madam Comfort Lamptey and a presentation on the synopsis of the Gender and Election Strategic Framework to be delivered by the ECOWAS Commission’s Director of Gender.

The release also indicated that, the event is part of activities for the First ECOFEPA General Summit and 2nd ECOFEPA Award Night, which will hold at the Executive Hall of the International Conference Centre, Abuja, to honour Nigeria’s Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, former military Head of State, General Ibrahim Babangida, business magnate, Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Dr. Tony Elumelu.

“Others to be honoured with awards includes the wife of the Senate President, Mrs. Toyin Ojora-Saraki, Chairman of Paulo Group of Companies, Chief Paul Odili, Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, Senator Daisy Danjuma and wife of Nigeria’s Rivers State Governor, Justice Suzzette Wike.

Also on the list of the awardees are the award winning singer, David Adedeji Adeleke a.k.a Davido, a Nigerian record producer, songwriter and entrepreneur, Michael Collins Ajereh a.k.a Don Jazzy, fashion blogger, Laura Ikeji and co-founder of Pinl Idea Africa, Lilian Eru Ameh,” The release said.

While Vice President Yemi Osinbajo of Nigeria will deliver a keynote goodwill message at the occasion, President of the ECOFEPA, Senator Princess Stella Adaeze Oduah is expected to give the Summit a welcome address.

Special personalities expected at the Summit include the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Rt. Hon. Moustapha Cisse Lo, the President of the Nigerian Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, the Vice President of the Republic of Liberia, Her Excellency, Jewel Howard Taylor, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Jean-Claude Kassi Brou as well as the ECOWAS Commissioner for Social Affairs and Gender, Dr. Sigma Fatima Jagne.

The ECOFEPA Awards night will begin from 6.30 pm, preceded by the ECOFEPA Summit, which is slated for 9.30am.
