The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has started an exercise to reduce power congestion, and help boost voltage supply to its customers in the Ashanti Region.
The project, dubbed “High Voltage Distribution Scheme (HVDS),” which began in November last year, would cover 15 suburbs of the Kumasi Metropolis in the Suame District, and is expected to be completed in eight weeks.
The project is funded by the ECG and World Bank, in collaboration with the government of Ghana.
According to the Public Relations Manager of the ECG, Mr. Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, the consultants and contractors were on the site and work was ongoing.
The ECG has met and briefed the leadership of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana National Association of Garages (GNAG), at Suame Magazine in Kumasi, about the project being undertaken at Suame Magazine and the industrial areas, where economic activities are dominant to remove illegal connections, and serve them better, in order to improve customer service.
He said the project seeks to change the existing network, and improve network in about 15 communities, from Magazine and its surroundings areas to Barekese, while replacing old equipment to improve the system to ensure safe, quality and reliable electricity delivery to the communities.
In a related development, the ECG is undertaking the construction of a second bulk supply point, which also entails the construction of pylons and high tension lines, and 33/11 KVA lines.
The network, Mr. Kyere Baidoo said, would be passing through the Anwomaso Community.
