“Any eligible voter should be able to walk into the EC’s office and register at any given time,” he said. “This will cost the Government less and remove the involvement of the political parties and the tensions and fights in the registration process,” Mr. George Kumi, a Former Ambassador to Libya and High Commissioner to Nigeria, stated.

Mr Kumi, who has announced that he would contest the Sunyani East Constituency Parliamentary seat as an Independent Candidate, said the tensions and atrocities, which characterised the Limited Voters’ Registration, brought fear and discouraged some eligible voters from participating in the exercise.

The former envoy said since voting was a civic right, the EC must ensure that prospective voters, especially those who had just turned18, were not disenfranchised in the November 7 polls and in subsequent general election.

Mr. Kumi said the EC would be able to produce a credible register with a permanent system.

He described the just-ended nationwide Limited Voters’ Registration Exercise as “unnecessary and a waste of national resources.”
