Born January 21, 1988, Eaten holds the world record in both the decathlon and indoor heptathlon events, and is only the second decathlete to break the 9,000-point barrier with 9,039 points. He smacked his own record in Shanghai on August 29, 2015 with a score of 9,045 points.

“I’m grateful and thankful to the IAAF for excellent competitions, the canvases that allow us to display our work,” he said.

Athletes spend the most vigorous years of human life, arguably called the ‘best years’, working to hone their abilities,” he added.

“I did beat Usain Bolt and Christian, my work simply differed in design. They are some of the most talented and beautiful performers of all time. I’m flattered to be among them,” the American noted.

“I accept this award on behalf of all of us athletes who love what we do,” he said in a statement.

Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba also won the female athlete of the year. Dibaba broke the 1500 meters world record in Monaco with the time of 50.07 seconds.
