Dr Kobby Okyere Darko, the new Western Regional Minister says continual improvement was key in advancing development particularly in the Western Region with its associated natural resources.

He therefore pledged to run an open administration involving all political parties, civil society and the media as he pushed for the accelerated development of the Region.

Dr Darko said, the Western Region was a serious growth pole for the whole of Ghana and would effectively coordinate government vision within the Region to make it a model Region and reference for development across the length and breadth of the country.

The new Minister gave the words of assurance when he exchanged handing over notes with the Out-going Western Regional Minister, Dr Kwaku Afriyie, at the weekend in Sekondi.

According to him, his main area of focus would be on youth development, private enterprise growth as well as entrepreneurship.

Dr. Afriyie leaves the seat of governance within the Region after a two- year tenure.

The ceremony was witnessed by heads of departments and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives.

Dr. Afriyie said his tenure was marked by successes as the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) helped to maintain peace, security and order and thanked members for their great support and collaboration.

“I have been very lucky working with people such as the REGSEC, I had good relations with members. Indeed, I had a successful tenure, apart from the GHUMCO gas explosion and the kidnappings, security has been very good.

“Even in the GHUMCO incident, we rose to the occasion with all the hospitals providing good supports to ensure that no life was lost.” he stated.

Dr. Afriyie lauded the contribution of the Western Region House Of Chiefs during his tenure and paid glowing tribute to Awulae Gyamfi Kwame Paramount Chief of Nsein traditional area for his friendship, adding ‘I am most grateful to you, Nananom.”

He made special mention of Sule, his househelp and Hannah, his secretary for making his stay in the region worthwhile.

To Mrs. Gifty Eugenia Kusi, his Deputy, he said, “I was not expecting anything least from your performance and I expect you to offer similar supports to Dr Darko for the region to continue to perform better.”

The Vice Chairman of the Western Regional House of Chiefs, Awulae Amihere Kpanyili, said the house was elated to have known him and coordinated with him in running the affairs of the Region.

He said Chieftaincy has a major role to play in governance and democracy and pledged their continual support to the new Minister, “the House would always operate an open-door policy to share ideas with you so that you continue with the good works of Dr Afriyie”.
