The defeat ended Crew#?s hopes of playing in the playoffs and kept alive Revolution?s hopes in the competition.

Defender A.J. Soares provided an unlikely spark for the Revolution?s postseason hopes.

In the 32d minute, midfielder Andy Dorman won a free kick to the left of the 18-yard box. Kelyn Rowe took the free kick and delivered a precise cross that found the head of Soares to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

It was Soares?s first goal of the season for the Revolution (13-11-9, 48 points).

But Columbus (12-16-5, 41 points) struck with an equalizer in the 59th minute. With his back to goal, midfielder Aaron Schoenfeld found Dominic Oduro, who fired the ball past keepr Matt Reis.

Dorman was tripped by Crew midfielder Tony Tchani in the 68th minute to win a penalty kick.

Defender Chris Tierney stepped up to the spot and struck a well-taken penalty into the bottom left corner of the net in the 69th minute to give the Revolution a 2-1 lead.

In the 71st minute, Schoenfeld tied the game at 2 with a left-footed shot into the roof of the net after receiving a pass from Oduro.

The Revolution took a 3-2 lead in the 76th minute. Dimitry Imbongo laid off a pass for Dorman, who took a touch before hitting a pass to the far post that Revolution midfielder Diego Fagundez tapped into the empty net.

Fagundez?s goal ? the game winner ? was his 13th of the season, good for fifth-best in MLS.

Crew (12-16-5), who were officially eliminated with the loss.
