44-year-old Rebecca allegedly stole N12.44m in police recruits’ allowances

Rebecca Okereken, 44, a dismissed Chief Superintendent of Police was on Thursday arraigned before the Igbosere Magistrate?s Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing N12.44 million in police recruits’ allowances.

The prosecuting police officer, Etim Nkankuk, an assistant superintendent of police, said the accused conspired with others to commit the fraud in 2010, before her dismissal from the Police College Barracks, Ikeja.

Her accomplices were said to still be at large.

The accused is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit felony and stealing.

According to the charge sheet, the offence is punishable under sections 516(1) and 390(5) of the Criminal Code Cap 17 Vol. II Laws of Lagos State, 2003.

Magistrate Folake Davies-Abegunde however granted the accused bail in the sum of N3million, with two sureties each in like sum.

?The sureties should be company executives of blue-chip companies, one of which must possess a landed property within Lagos State,” she said.

The case was adjourned to August 2, 2012, for further hearing.
